In our home, playtime occurs for what feels like allllll day! Addi’s famous line is “come play for 5 minutes!?” as she holds up her five little fingers. One thing I have quickly learned with two little ones, is how their attention span can be so short, and they often get distracted very easily! One trick I have learned is to create little spaces and pull out only a handful of toys in order to draw their attention to certain toys to focus on!
Their playroom is full of a ton of options, but in order for Addi to sit and fully enjoy a toy and truly focus on what she is doing, I pull out some options for her to play with. This allows for some quality free play time, and gives me an extra minute to get some things done! I typically do something like this while I lay Beckett for a nap, so she can get some quiet time before she goes down for a nap, or if both kids are a little high energy and need some down time, this tip totally can help just bring the energy level down and allows the kids the learn and discover on their own.
You definitely do not need a full on playroom to create such a space for your little one! I typically keep most toys in their playroom or our basement, but if I am on the main level say cleaning the kitchen or whatever, I create the space down there by bringing 2-3 toys for them to play with. Once I am done whatever I am doing, I like to sit and join in on the playtime and see what their little minds were doing! Addi loves to show much what she can do, toys like the Fisher Price smart scan color chameleon, are one of her favorites – and has totally been helping with counting and learning colors! Do you guys have any tips or tricks on how to incorporate more free play into your child’s lives?
